چکیده

Introduction Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) in alcoholics and malnourished patients was first described by Adams, Victor and Mancall in 1959. This commonly fatal demyelinative process that involves the pons almost exclusively, is of unknown aetiology. In the majority of the published cases, CPM was associated with chronic alcoholism, malnutrition and electrolyte abnormalities, particularly hyponatraemia. Other factors implicated in this disease have included toxins, chronic debilitation, cerebral ischaemia, infection and immunological injury. Of about 175 cases published in the literature, only 4 were reported from the United Kingdom (Adams, 1962; Tomlinson, Pierides and Bradley, 1976). The first case of CPM associated with chronic alcoholism and liver cirrhosis in this country is now described.

Central pontine myelinolysis following orthotopic liver transplant: association with cyclosporine toxicity.

Central pontine myelinolysis can occur after orthotopic liver transplantation leading to high mortality and serious morbidity. In our case, central pontine myelinolysis was associated with wide fluctuations in cyclosporine levels during an episode of hypocholesterolaemia, which may have precipitated central pontine myelinolysis.

Central pontine myelinolysis after orthotopic liver transplant-a rare complication.

Central pontine myelinolysis is a rare but devastating cause of morbidity and mortality after orthotopic liver transplant. The exact cause of central pontine myelinolysis is uncertain. However, rapid correction of hyponatremia has been described as a major factor. We describe a patient with central pontine myelinolysis after orthotopic liver transplant in the absence of significant hyponatremia...

Ocular bobbing and myoclonus in central pontine myelinolysis.

Ocular bobbing and myoclonus were unusual findings in a patient with central pontine myelinolysis. Pathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis.

Temporal changes of MR findings in central pontine myelinolysis.

We report central pontine myelinolysis in orthotopic liver transplant patients. Sequential MR imaging of these patients with central pontine myelinolysis shows progressive decrease of T2-weighted MR signal in the pons, which may not resolve despite complete neurologic recovery.

Resolving MR features in osmotic myelinolysis (central pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis).

Osmotic myelinolysis is a distinctive clinical syndrome with characteristic MR features in the central pons (central pontine myelinolysis) and in other locations (extrapontine myelinolysis). We describe the resolving MR features in an adolescent who has experienced complete neurologic recovery. Regions of involvement manifested increased T2 signal intensity. The extrapontine involvement was not...

Parkinsonism and dystonia in central pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis.

Parkinsonism as well as dystonic signs are rarely seen in central pontine myelinolysis and extrapontine myelinolysis. A 51 year old woman developed central pontine myelinolysis and extrapontine myelinolysis with parkinsonism after severe vomiting which followed alcohol and drug intake, even though marked hyponatraemia had been corrected gradually over six days. Parkinsonism resolved four months...
